The mobile phone worm Commwarrior has been spotted on the shores of Blighty, that is an instance of the worm has been detected in the United Kingdom. This would make the UK the 15th country to have had a sighting of the MMS aware mobile phone worm.
The worm which was first detected back in March has been steadily spreading across the world. Unlike Cabir whos spread has been pretty slow Commwarrior has spread at a good rate with infections being spotted in:- Ireland
- India
- Oman
- Italy
- Philippines
- Finland
- Greece
- South Africa
- Malaysia
- Austria
- Brunei
- Germany
- USA
- Canada
- United Kingdom
The infection in the UK was close behind sightings of the Commwarrior in the USA and Canada. There are a number of Anti-Virus products for mobile phones and most of them can detect and protect against Commwarrior infections. However Commwarrior does require some user interaction to install successfully, so please watch for things sent to you via MMS that appear to contain executables don’t install them unless you are expecting them or know exactly what it is. Also in some countries mobile phone operators have implemented scanning on their MMS gateways to trap and handle instances of Commwarrior and similar mobile phone malware. |
