The realm of mobile malware has been largely consigned to Symbian Series 60 and similar devices. However early today a new Trojan has been discovered that uses J2ME. The Trojan called Redbrowser, it is a J2ME piece of malware that apparently works on most phones that have J2ME support. Which means hundreds of types of phones from a wide range of manufacturers.

The Trojan pretends to be a WAP browser offering free WAP browsing using free SMS messages to send the WAP page content. But what Redbrowser actually does is to send SMS messages to expensive numbers thus causing financial losses to the user.

As the Trojan claims to send free SMS messages as part of its normal operation, it easily fools a user into allowing the application to use Java SMS capabilities to send out the SMS messages to Russian premium rate numbers.

However the Trojan has Russian text as a result it will limit the scope of attack to Russian speakers as victims.
