Mobile Malware Payware meets Symbian PDF Print E-mail

It seems the malware approach pioneered last year by the Trojans RedBrowser and Wesber has made it to the Symbian Smartphone platform. The approach was that the Trojan on an infected device would send out SMS messages to premium rate numbers.

The two pioneers RebBrowser and Wesber where J2ME based applications designed to run on Java enabled phones. However the new kid on the block is called Viver and is designed to run on the Symbian Smartphone platform.

According to Kaspersky this new Trojan was uploaded to file sharing section of a popular mobile device file sharing site. The file was presented as a program that users would actually want such as a photo editor or similar, pretty standard technique for this kind of thing.

Viver sends the messages to a premium rate short number, at a cost to the user of about 177 roubles (almost $7). Short code numbers tend to be too expensive for the average user to rent, instead they tend to be managed by a content provider and ‘sublet’ to an individual. The money made by the use of the short code is then split with the individual, mobile provider and content provider.

You can find out a bit more about Viver here on the Kaspersky weblog.
