First MMS Mobile Phone Worm PDF Print E-mail

Well it probably was always on the cards at some point ever since the first Symbian OS based worm/virus/Trojan was written to do nasty things to your mobile phone. Those innovative virus writers have done it again, a Symbian OS based worm that can use the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) as a infection medium. The worm is known as Commwarrior and is a worm for Symbian Series 60 mobile phones, it attempts to spread using Bluetooth and MMS. MMS messages are text messages that include an image, audio or video. MMS messages are sent from one phone to another or to email.

This bit of malware appears to have originated in Russia as it contains the text string ‘OTMOP03KAM HET!’ which is Russian and roughly translated means ‘No to brainheads’. Interestingly previous mobile phone malware such as Cabir have been very slow spreading, however something that can successfully exploit MMS as an infection mechanism could spread far quicker almost on a par with email based worms in the PC world. The other interesting point of this infection mechanism is that, anything that is a fast replicator could rack up a hefty phone bill for the victim.
