Users of the Cisco.com website are still trying to battle their way through the chaos left by the discovery of a security vulnerability within the Cisco.com site that could allow an attacker to compromise the login details of any user registered on the site. After the discovery of the issue in the site, Cisco reset all the passwords of all the users of the Cisco.com site as a precaution after the disclosure of the vulnerability within the search functionality of the site that would allow the recovery of login information for the users of the site.

Cisco informed users yesterday by email of the issue and advised them to email an automated service to get their new login details. Some users however are reporting issues in the process of obtaining valid login details, it is understood this could be due to the volume of requests to the system for generating new login information.

Cisco in a statement regarding the issue stated that they had located the problem and had taken steps to correct it. Cisco also said the incident "does not appear to be due to a weakness in our security products and technologies or with our network infrastructure". The vulnerability was brought to Cisco’s attention by a third-party security organisation that Cisco has declined to name.

All this comes just a week after the Blackhat controversy when Cisco and ISS pulled the presentation that was later given by Michael Lynn on exploiting weaknesses within IOS. Cisco’s handling of the incident has stirred up ill feeling within segments of the security community both Whitehat and Blackhat.
