Microsoft’s new subscription service known as Windows OneCare that is to provide automatically updated anti-virus, anti-spyware and two-way firewall protection is being investigated by the European anti-trust regulators. This movement of Microsoft into the consumer security market has been on the cards now since the purchase of the anti-virus company GeCAD in 2003, enterprise anti-virus vendor Sybari Software in Feb 2005 and anti-spyware company Giant at the end of 2004.

EU investigators have asked Symantec to provide them with information about Microsoft’s plans for the OneCare in order to help determine if Microsoft has broken again the European Unions anti-trust rules. However, Symantec denied they had lodged a formal complaint with the EU over the new Microsoft service.

This is not the first time Microsoft have been investigated by the European Union, last year Microsoft was found guilty of breaking the law and fined nearly €500m and ordered to offer a version of Windows in Europe without Microsoft Media Player bundled with it and to open up their APIs for other developers.
