Since the inception of Bluetooth many security researchers have taken a pop at the technology. The latest in a long line of attacks has come from two researchers who presented at last weeks hack.lu 2006 conference a new tool to recover the pin number used during the pairing of Bluetooth devices.

The two researchers Thierry Zoller and Kevin Finistere gave a presentation on Bluetooth issues. They showed off a tool they had developed called BTCrack that could crack the Bluetooth PIN and Linkkey assuming it had sniffed the initial pairing between two Bluetooth devices. The tool implements attacks previously discussed by Yaniv Shaked and Avishai Wool in the paper ‘Cracking the Bluetooth PIN’.

The full details of their presentation can be found here, interestingly they released more details and the code for the proof of concept InqTana worm that targets Apple OS X based machines as well details of the BTCrack tool.
