It seems that it may not be an April fools prank but we could well be getting a month of bugs targeted at the social networking site MySpace during April. Well it begs the question why MySpace, but as with anything picked on these days for security problems, people are going where the money is. Windows is targeted because it is easy to crack and you get so much more bang for your buck if you can get a botnet of 10,000 victim desktop PCs using easily compromised Windows boxes. MySpace has been getting very close to the same attention over the last 6 months or so, there are a lot of people using the social networking site. There are a lot of problems with the site’s security which are allowing the insertion of nasty code in profiles to propagate malware. So it stands to reason why it is a popular target for attack. With many of the users of MySpace not being the most tech-savvy of people it is very easy to trick people into clicking on a link to direct them to a site which if your not paying attention will get you installing the latest Zlob variant. So what will the MySpace Month of Bugs achieve, well it may shake up the developers of the MySpace environment to rethink their handling of security. Then again it may not. This new project has been proposed by two researchers going by the names Mondo Armando and Mustachio and details of their plans can be found in their LiveJournal blog here. |
