More fuel for the rumor mill that Microsoft is set to take over Claria, formally known as the The Gator Corporation. You know the company that pretty much started the whole spyware and adware problem. It seems that Microsoft AntiSpyware recently had a signature update that reduced the risk associated with the various Claria adware and spyware offerings from high to a more lenient rating. Previously Microsoft AntiSpyware would recommend you remove these insidious pieces of software from your machine and would do so for you. However in the last few days it seems that the risk rating was reduced to indicate that this spyware was safe to leave on a users system.

Over the last few days however various new sites have been running with rumors of a pending sale of Claria to Microsoft, and this latest move has thrown petrol on the embers of the rumor fire.. Microsoft when asked about the change in the classification would not comment on it or the rumors of a pending buyout of Claria.

So what does this mean, well basically if Microsoft buy Claria expect more ‘legitimized spyware being installed on your Windows PC by WindowsUpdate, more adverts and pop-ups when browsing the Internet with Internet Explorer and generally your computers getting owned left and right.

What can you do, well first un-install Microsoft AntiSpyware replace it with another AntiSpyware product from a more reputable vendor. If you can remove Windows from you PC and replace with something else. If simply put if Microsoft buys Claria expect more Spyware not less.

The change in the signatures was detected by the spyware researcher Eric Howes here in a report on Broadband Reports.
