It seems someone in Russia thinks there is just not enough Symbian based spyware out there. On Wednesday some helpful Russian decided to release a prototype Symbian spyware to the world to help rectify this. For good measure they included the source code to aid future spyware developers. The prototype is an SMS forwarding spyware application, and has been named by McAfee as SymbOS/Htool-SMSSender.A.intd. The author states that the prototype can:
Now the prototype it seems can do the first 3 okay, but fails to be able to do the final one. However, the reason is probably because the author did not actually include the SMS sending code in the prototype. However, armed with the provided source code you can bet someone will add the SMS sending code and we’ll see it added to the growing list of things you don’t want on your cellphone. Recently we saw mobile malware authors including a commercial Symbian spyware application to steal information from people’s phones, however due to features of that commercial spyware the attempt failed. This new attempt could be an attempt to make a homegrown spyware tool that can be bundled with other malware for Symbian phones. |
