The University of Calgary, the educational establishment that brought you the how to write computer viruses course, is all set to teach a spyware and spam course in the fall. The course is similar to the existing course where students learn to write computer viruses, this new course will teach students how to create email spam and develop spyware. The aim of this new course just like the computer viruses course is to educate students in new ways to fight these online nuisances.

"The idea is for the students to learn how these things propagate, how they are created, how they interact with the system and that sort of thing," says John Aycock, who teaches the viruses course. Although a some what unorthodox view, it may actually be the best way to teach the future IT professionals how to combat malware.

The new course is planned to debut in the fall, just for the like the computer virus course there are elements of the IT industry that don’t like this approach to fighting the online malware menace. Although taking the course may not look too good on your CV as some companies have said that they would not hire someone that has completed this course.

Interestingly should a students virus escape the confines of the classroom the student would fail the course and get a visit from the law. As each student is required to sign a contract with the University to enforce a ‘security policy’ designed to prevent potential virus outbreaks from the classroom.
