eBay is set to roll out a private messaging solution for eBay users to help combat the rise in phishing attacks against eBay users. The goal to make it possible for eBay users to distinguish official announcements from phishing scams. The service dubbed My Messages is to offer a read-only inbox for logged in eBay users, in which users would receive trading and account email rather than via conventional email.

The solution should make it easier for eBay users to weed out phishing scams, as the service is read-only and it not possible for other third party users to send messages to a users My Messages, only eBay systems. Therefore users will be able to draw a high degree of confidence in the authenticity of mail.

Hopefully other online providers will take note of this lead and look to offering similar solutions.
